Should I Write on my Chalkboard Wall?

Whenever I have too much free time on my hands I start switching it up around my house.
I’ll paint a wall here, buy a new (to me) piece of furniture on craigslist there, spray paint some knick knacks, sell off stuff I’m sick of… I’m sure you get the idea.

On Vacation Day One I painted my kitchen wall with black chalkboard paint, something I’ve been meaning to do for years. Literally. I’ve had the paint for at least two years.

I’m super happy with the sooty shade of black and nice matte texture, so now I’m trying to decide if I should write (or more realistically allow my friends to write) on my chalkboard wall.

I like how simple and pristine it is, and worry that there will always be chalk residue once I bust it out, and that might drive me a little nuts…

So what do you think- should I write on my chalkboard wall or not?

Oh man, I’d be so torn too. I love the clean, black look but I’d be so tempted! I’m pretty sure if you clean it well with water, you’ll be able to get it all the way clean!

I am totally torn too. I love how it looks right now – clean, crisp, and perfect – but I think having your friends write you notes and decorating it with all sorts of artistic doodles and what not could be kind of awesome as well. I suppose you can always wash it off, or paint over it, if you end up not liking it?

I understand wanting things to look pristine (okay, actually I don’t because I’m always sort of a disorganized mess!), but I think the whole fun of having a chalkboard wall is writing on it! Even if you just want to spend a lot of time writing something that you really love and that fits your aesthetic, rather than changing it up, I can’t say I see the point of having a chalkboard wall if you don’t write on it. You could have saved a lot of money painting the wall a similar color without having to buy the special chalkboard paint! Go for it girl!

Even though I didn’t exactly set out to have a chalkboard wall (I was more after the matte color) I feel similarly! Like now that I have it, I should flaunt it! LOL.
I do have to point out that the chalkboard paint I used was probably comparable, if not cheaper, than regular paint though!
So it is purely a question of aesthetics, and I’ve talked myself in a big ol’ circle! :)

We made some chalkboards with chalkboard paint from a craft store for my toddler’s room, and they get pretty squeaky clean when we wipe them down with a very wet rag. I also like how they look all marked up though, so either way I think it is win/win. Now I need to convince my significant other to let us do this to one of our kitchen walls!

    Definitely recipes!

    • Tabitha says:

True…it would eliminate my need for so many scraps of paper when working on recipes!
      And grocery lists!

Ooh pretty! Maybe make a nice pretty frame and allow writing within that? That way its controlled. Love the crisp look for now

    • Tabitha says:

      Yes!
I was thinking of maybe taping pictures I like up and drawing little frames around them…

Do it! I just painted a chalkboard wall last week and it’s been so much fun to write on. I’m not looking forward to the cleaning part, but ours is over tile, so the dust isn’t bad to clean off the floor :)

  8. Mandy says:

YES! And if you hate how it looks, you can always wipe it down and slap on a fresh coat of paint.

  9. Lisa E says:

Write on it! Please let me know where you got the paint….I want to get some for E’s room :)

I feel torn. The chalkboard dust sounds terrible (I always remember chalky erasers making me cough in elementary school!) but recipes and notes from friends sound super fun! Too bad they don’t make a “marker” version of chalk- like that stuff you use on car windows (would that work?)… That would be perfect. No mess, all the fun!

  12. You have such adorable handwriting — I say yes!!

I vote for writing. Every kitchen needs a bit of whimsy. Also, do I spy a pie in the after picture? It’s the perfect motivation I need to start the pie baking I’d planned today. :)

  14. vickie says:

This looks so dope! I would totally write on it. What else is a chalkboard wall good for besides writing on?

  15. Catherine says:

I love it. You should totally write on it. :)
