One Cross-Country Road-Trip Later…

Um, hi!
It’s been a little while, hasn’t it?

Of course I didn’t intend to leave you guys hanging for so long- but that’s what happens when you pack up your life (and 3 pets!) and drive across the country. One short week after returning to the country.

My grandiose plans of blogging in my hotel room in the evening (evening! ha! that would have been SO civilized) quickly dissolved into a 3 AM glass of wine, followed by a few hours of sleep, an elaborate packing ritual (these pets pack A LOT of shit) and another day on the road.
It was actually a lot more fun than I thought it would be though, traveling solo human.

That said, behold my cross-Americana adventures with my traveling menagerie:

We got a bit of a late start on Saturday, to the tune of, we didn’t leave LA until the evening, so waking up to crazy blue skies (and silver fire hydrants!) in Tuscon on Sunday morning was quite a treat. Take note that my groomer did me a great service and decked out my pups for Memorial Day weekend.

It was stars and stripes (and two very popular dogs) all the way across the country.

Day two on the road felt very productive (and very long) because we trekked across 3 states! Breakfast in Arizona, lunch in New Mexico and dinner in Texas! Of course I ate all three of those meals in my car while blasting the air-conditioning for the furry family.

Yeah.
Did I mention yet that my 14 year old cat Piper was along for the ride?
Of course she refused to wear a bandana.
Cats are such bitches sometimes.

I woke up in San Antonio on Monday morning (erhm, late morning) with BBQ on the brain, and thanks to a tweet from Black’s I was able to hop off the 10E (seriously, I took the same freeway the entire way across the country) and enjoy some of the best BBQ in Texas!
And at it’s oldest family run BBQ joint to boot! Delicious.

After what seemed like an eternity driving across Texas we finally made it to Louisiana, and pulled up to our hotel right around midnight. A little dog walking and a few hours of sleep later and I headed off to my first day of work in New Orleans. And my first meal:

I’ve been working and eating (and eating some more) ever since with hardly a minutes break to tell you all about it! But I promise I’ll try to be better!

There’s just too much good food here not to share.

What have you been doing/eating these last few weeks?

Sounds like an amazing trip and I can assure you I have ate nothing as delicious as that po’ boy looks in a long time!!

    • Tabitha says:

Confession time: I’ve eaten that same sandwich more than once already. Let’s just leave it that! :)

  2. very epic – looks like a very “exotic america” kind of trip!

    • Tabitha says:

It was pretty epic for such a short trip!
Totally exotic for us city folk, but probably pretty normal for the rest of the country! :)

  3. Allie says:

Yep, you never quite realize how big Texas is until you’re driving across it for-everrrrrr! Glad you got to La. safely!

  4. Serena says:

Looks like an awesome road trip, much more enjoyable with the furry family than being totally solo :)

But, I’m a bit confused so maybe I missed a post… are you moving to New Orleans?

    • Tabitha says:

Ha ha- I hinted at it here, but never really confirmed that it was happening…
I’m here in New Orleans working on a film through the summer! :)
      And eating. :)

I just made this trip last October! We moved with a car full of boxes, a five-year old, two puppies, and two itty bitty baby kittens…. from Los Angeles to Jacksonville. Texas felt like pergatory! We took the 10E the whole way with a detour in New Oreleans (so worth the extra time). Glad you’re back to posting (and enjoying some good road trip food) :) :)

    • Tabitha says:

      Yes, purgatory.
      But damn delicious BBQ!

And yowza girl- that’s a carful!
Glad you made it too! :)

Ah, the long voyage across Texas on the 10. I did that one from Mississippi to Los Angeles in 1997 with my mom and most of my worldly possessions before starting my second year of college. I’ve also driven across on 40 and 70 and I think the 10 is the best. I can’t imagine doing it with my cats.

    • Tabitha says:

Ha ha! The cat definitely added an element of “oh shit I have to leave the air running at all times” but otherwise, she’s a surprisingly good traveler!

  7. Emily says:

That looks like an incredible journey, I love that all your pets came along for the ride too, how cool are you guys!?! Being English I have no idea what a Po boy is, but I’m sure it’s yummy! x

Glad you made it safe and sound! Super jealous of your po’ bo and your trek across country. Last time I road tripped cross country was in 2002 and my friend and I blasted Korn all the way across Texas. We drove for what seemed like 24 hours straight. I think we stopped for gas and to pee, but that was it. Happy to hear that your furry family didn’t give you trouble on the road trip there…I can’t imagine traveling with a cat, but way to go Piper! Be sure to post photos of the new (temporary) digs and other NoLa delights. Melanie and I are currently apartment hunting on the West Side and South Bay, but we are leaning toward staying near MDR. We will be sure to have you over for dinner when you return. :)

We just finished our honeymoon roadtrip and ended up in beautiful Seattle (seriously I’m so in love with it) and we had a similar “Texas” experience in Kansas and then again in Arizona… Whew I’ll be glad if I never see the desert again! Haha :) Congrats on the movie/summer plan! How awesome! Did you get to transplant your whole family or are you guys suffering through some long distance? :)
