Yes Virginia, They Have Soapboxes in Hawaii.

One thing I both love and hate about the holiday season is the rapid acceleration of time which begins with Halloween and ends on January 2nd. I don’t know about you guys, but I usually wake up scratching my head and wondering where the last two months went.

And it’s not just on account of the eggnog either.

It almost seems like a wicked retail scheme designed to force you into the malls at midnight the week before christmas, where you pick and choose among all the conveniently located (and excessively packaged) “gifts.”

But this year, I’m not buying it.
Literally.

I’m on a mission (and not just during the holiday season either) to spend my money where it matters. To me. I want to feel good handing over my dollar for something, big or small, that truly feels special. So I’m all about unique, local, hand-crafted and/or edible gifts. Or experiences. Or especially experiences involving edible gifts…

And much like parking, these things are in short supply at the local mall.

Not to worry though! I DO have a few good ideas for awesome, edible, and affordable gifts right here in Los Angeles and I’m definitely gonna share! And (squeal) I’ve convinced a few good friends to share their own gift guides for the cities they call home this week while I’m off frolicking in Hawaii.

Which by the way, is gorgeous:

And my niece is darn cute too.

So I’ll see you tomorrow when we check out a few awesome NYC gift ideas with two of my favorite bloggers, Colleen from There Comes a Yes, and Terri from Try Anything Once okay? Be sure to stop by and give these awesome ladies some love!

Also I’d love to hear what type of holiday shopper you are?
Done already?
Waiting for the sales?
Waiting for Christmas Eve?

I can’t wait to read these gift guides. I’m about 50% of the way done shopping – I’ve purchased a lot of gifts from etsy. I can’t sand the mall this time of year, especially the one in downtown SF.

Yes, unfortunately I have to spend loads of time in malls (for work) and so I think I have a particular bitterness for them! lol.

Etsy definitely is a nicer (and more awesome) way to go!

Since I’ve been confined to bed rest for the past 3 months I’ve been making a lot of gifts. Normally I don’t have time to make all my gifts, so I’m excited to give something unique this year. I should be done with all my gifts early December (I’ve had a huge head start and many hours to spend). But then the question of wrapping…

Ooh- time is such a blessing in disguise! (esp. now that you and your shiny hair can move around!) I always want to make all my gifts too, but usually the clock catches up with me…Although I think I have it under control this year. Maybe.

As far as wrapping goes, I’m a big fan of the classic brown paper tied up string…
Then embellished with a little metallic ornament or sprig of rosemary.
    I think that’s what I’m doing…

Very inspirational, I will be taking part in Small business Saturday for my holiday shopping needs. Also (shameless plug sorry) http://www.squeekyknees.com is an awesome way to brighten any moms or baby’s day!

I love this! I try to shop locally (one of my very favorite designers lives here in Chicago) and I love when the attention’s not on the Big Box Stores.

I’m actually trying out a little small business Saturday deal with my photography business. So, hey, if you know anyone looking for a photographer… ;)
