PB&J Brownies from Feast on the Cheap

Mariel from Feast on the Cheap here. When Tabitha asked us to contribute a post to G&G while she hopped across the Pacific to Japan, we were absolutely thrilled. I can’t recall how I first came across Glitter & Ganache, but for quite some time now, it’s become one of my go-to blogs for all things chic. So we feel even chicer by association….

I hemmed and hawed over what recipe to whip up in honor of our pinch-hitting post, but a ravenous craving for grilled PB&J got me thinking in preschool mode. Never grilled peanut butter and jelly?
Try it, immediately.

I happen to be in my third trimester of pregnancy – my cravings come on strong and won’t abate until they’ve been properly sated – so I decided to combine my penchant for PB with my pervasive love of chocolate. In fact, I just finished reading “Do Chocolate Lovers Really Have Sweeter Babies?” and as it turns out, they really do. Science says so and that was all the convincing I needed.

But even if you aren’t at the mercy of appetite-driven maternal machinations – and a strong desire to birth the sweetest, most amenable baby ever – I suspect you’ll go gaga for this dessert. I used a slightly altered version of my favorite brownie recipe as the base (thanks Martha!) and swirled in store-bought peanut butter and jam, creating a yummy mosaic that infuses every chocolatey bite with a delicious nutty-sweetness. Are you drooling yet? If so, I have plenty of bibs over here, so just let me know.

Better still – these are no more difficult to concoct than regular brownies, but they look (and taste) way more gourmet.

Thanks again to Tabitha for enlisting us to guest post – safe travels abroad!

Peanut Butter & Jelly Brownies
Makes 12 Brownies
Courtesy of Feast on the Cheap

Ingredients:
3 Tablespoons unsalted butter (plus a little extra for greasing the pan) – stock
3 Tablespoons unsweetened applesauce – $2.39
6 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder – stock
¾ cup all-purpose flour – stock
¼ teaspoon baking powder – stock
¼ teaspoon salt – stock
1 cup sugar – stock
2 large eggs – stock
2 teaspoons vanilla extract – stock
½ cup peanut butter – stock
½ cup jam or fruit preserves – $2.89
Grand total assuming “well-stocked” kitchen: $5.28
Cost per brownie: $0.44

Directions:
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Generously butter the bottom and sides of a 7×11″ baking pan. Set aside.
2. Bring a small sauce pan or double boiler to a steamy simmer, then place a heat-proof pan over top (don’t let the top pan touch the water). Combine the butter, apple sauce, chocolate chips and cocoa in the top pan and stir until melted and creamy. Set aside.
3. Whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl, set aside.
4. In the bowl of an electric mixer, combine the eggs, sugar and vanilla and beat on medium-high using the whisk attachment for four minutes, until pale and creamy. Add the chocolate mixture and beat until just combined. Reduce speed to low (or “stir”) and add the flour mixture, stirring until just combined.
5. Spread the brownie batter evenly into the buttered pan.
6. Scoop the peanut butter into a microwave-safe bowl and nuke for 20-25 seconds, until it softens and becomes creamier.
7. Use a spoon to ladle dollops of peanut butter on top of the brownie batter, spacing evenly. Then ladle dollops of jam right next to the peanut butter. Use the tip of a knife to marbleize and spread the peanut butter & jam – you can create a pretty pattern or just smear it across the top, it’s up to you. Just make sure to distribute relatively evenly so you get a taste of PB&J in every bite.
8. Bake for 27-32 minutes, or until a tester inserted into the middle of the brownies comes out clean (meaning the brownie batter doesn’t stick to the tester, the PB&J will, of course). Cool in the pan on a wire rack, cut and serve with a tall glass of milk or vanilla ice cream (or all by themselves!).

Mariel, I’m completely and totally blown away! Not to mention drooling. After a lovely and relaxing weekend trip to Nikko, these might be just the thing to start the week off right back here in Tokyo. Or wherever you are. And I don’t think my friends would complain if I made a little mess in the kitchen whipping up a batch (or three) of these fabulous after-school inspired morsels. With ideas like this, I have no doubt that you’ll have the sweetest babe on the block!
And he/she will definitely have the most chic and gourmet mama!

Strawberry Picking in Chiba

Hey guys!
I just couldn’t resist popping in to share this sweet little adventure…

On Sunday we took a little road-trip to Kawatsura Strawberry Farm in Chiba prefecture, where we got to pick (and eat!) as many strawberries as we could.

Before we headed out, Nami warned me that it wasn’t huge and open like an “american farm,” so I was prepared for all the greenhouses.

But I wasn’t prepared for was how amazingly sweet and delicious the strawberries were. They were seriously the best strawberries I’ve ever eaten. Anywhere.
Including those from my own garden.

I think I ate 100.
And I’m not even exaggerating.

Only Rio might have eaten more strawberries than me- she was still stuffing her little face long after I relinquished my strawberry bucket.

Japanese strawberries, I big fat puffy heart love you.

Where in the world have you eaten the BEST of something?
What? When? How?

Vegan Almond Cake from Cute + Delicious

Hi everyone! I’m Alix from Cute and Delicious and I’m honored to be here on Glitter and Ganache while Tabitha is away traveling the world. I thought I would bring you all a treat on my visit here as I’m a big fan of baking, and have an unruly sweet tooth. This vegan almond cake is simple to make and easier to eat. It is decadently moist and would perfectly pair with nearly any topping. I like to keep it light with a dusting of powdered sugar but you could just as easily go with frosting and chocolate ganache or strawberries and coconut cream.

Vegan Almond Cake
1 cup almond milk
1 tsp vinegar (apple cider or white)
1 cup plus 2 Tbs all purpose flour
1/3 cup almond meal
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 cup sugar
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 tsp almond extract

Directions:
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and grease and flour your cake pan. Whisk the vinegar into the almond milk and set aside. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, almond meal, baking powder and salt. In a separate bowl, combine the sugar, oil, extracts and almond milk mixture. Make a well in your dry ingredients and pour in the wet. Stir until just combined and only a few clumps remain. Pour into the prepared cake pan and cook for 30 – 35 minutes, or until the edges brown and pull away from the pan. Let sit for about 5 minutes before removing from pan and letting cool on a wire rack. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and enjoy!

Oh yum. Thank you so much for sharing Alix! It’s been fun to finally meet my twitter pal, first at Alt and then more recently for some lunch/gossip back in LA. Everything about Alix is just as cute and delicious as her lovely blog, and I highly recommend you head over there and check her out! And now I’m off to satisfy my own sweet tooth at one of the many delicious bakeries here in Tokyo!

A Pocketful of Love: DIY

Remember last week when I teased you all with this post of all my new Closet Rehab posts to come? Well, the first one is up over at Kin Community!

So please go watch it:

And leave nice comments!

Because of course the very first comment is by a nasty nelly who asks “why?”
Because it’s awesome. That’s why.

So…Get Yourself a gold leather pocket!

1. Use a seam-ripper to carefully remove existing pocket.
2. Iron open all seams to create a pattern for your new (gold leather) pocket.
3. Use this pattern (old pocket) to trace an outline onto your leather (or whatever fun pattern/print you want for your new pocket).
4. Make sure you add an inch at the top if you didn’t open that seam (I didn’t!)
5. Cut out your pocket.
6. Fold over top one inch, cover with light weight fabric (use old pocket) and iron.
7. fold and iron each side to match original seam allowances- usually 1/4 to 1/2 inch.
8. double check that your new pocket is the same size as the original.
9. use fabric glue (tiny dots on the corners) to secure pocket to shirt.
10. use sewing machine (might want leather needles) to stitch pocket to shirt.

The amazing variety of leather supplies here in Tokyo makes me wanna switch out the pockets on ALL my shirts… Good thing I’m an ocean away from my sewing machine!

Any fun pockets/projects in your world this week?

Big Wave from Tokyo

Hi guys, it’s me here! I just thought I’d pop in and say hello! I’m writing to you from the cutest coffee shop at Tokyu Hands b/c I can’t get the wifi at my friend’s place to work yet, rats!

BUT hey, I’m writing to you from Tokyo, so I really can’t complain (at all!)

I hope you’re enjoying our awesome guest posters? I expect you’ll all be sporting bleached jeans and large owl pendants when I get back! And I won’t blame you if you stuff yourself with kabocha every day that I’m gone either. Yum!

So…
Do you want to see what I’ve been up to so far?

I had a busy first day in Tokyo: lunch with Nami at the cutest cafe in Shibuya before she went to work, and then an afternoon alone wandering around Shibuya, Omotosando, and Harajuku. I got the important things out of the way immediately: Tokyu Hands, Top Shop, and Opening Ceremony (it’s 7 stories here!). I walked from Shibuya to Omotosando and Harajuku and then took the train to meet Nami at Yoyogi Station when she was finished with work. Did I mention that it was raining?

Not a torrential down pour or anything, just moody, atmospheric youfeellikeyou’reinamovie type rain. I loved it. We definitely don’t get enough rain in LA.

We caught the train from Yoyogi back to to Nami’s house, ate some dinner, had a shower (and bath, oh how I LOVE a Japanese bath!) and then jetlag got the better of me and I passed out! Truth be told I’m posting this from Tokyu Hands, but I wrote it when I was suddenly wide awake one morning at 3am, also known as 11am LA time, and an extremely late hour for me to sleep past (or even until!)

And that’s that! I’ve been spending lots of time with Nami’s (darling) parents and Sukiyabashi Jiro was life-changing!

I’ll check back in with you guys again soon, and in the meantime I hope you continue to enjoy all our awesome guest posters to come!

And I’m curious…
What’s your favorite thing to do when you travel alone?
Anyone else take funny (hello umbrellas!) pictures?

ps. awesome DIY a little later too!

Concert Fashion for Littles

Hello G&G readers! I’m so honored to be a guest here while Tabitha is off enjoying some world renowned sushi! This is especially great since she asked me to blather about my favorite subject these days…dressing up my son Oscar.

Old navy romper, H&M cap

One of my favorite San Francisco bands – Lord Loves a Working Man – did a free performance the other afternoon at Union Square. Opportunities to enjoy live music have been slim since I embarked on parenthood. This was a great chance to see a fabulous band and have O experience live music as well. Of course he fell asleep shortly before they took the stage and then woke up a bit perplexed a couple of songs in. I also failed to bring earplugs (although it was not an overly loud show) so we kept ourselves at a distance. The show featured a troupe of hula hoopers so that turned out to be the big plus for O. Activities like this are the happy side to raising a child in an urban environment. So what do you wear to your first hula hooping concert experience? Suspenders of course!

T-shirt: thrifted, no label
Suspender pants, straw fedora : H&M
Rubber tennis shoes: iplay

I have a lot more fun dressing O than I imagined I would. I do find myself frustrated that girls departments are usually twice the size of boys in most stores, but in the last 16 months that I’ve been outfitting my little guy I have found some great sources for boys apparel. Thrifting can’t be beat when it comes to kids wear, especially for the under 2 set. Most clothes are outgrown before they show any wear. All Thrifting requires a little bit of digging but O has been able to sport lots of cute, recent items from BabyGap, Janie and Jack and Hannah Anderson, not to mention the occasional vintage item. My other go-to spot is H&M. Not all locations carry kids clothes but it can well worth it to seek one out. O gets a lot of compliments on his hat collection and almost every one of them have come from H&M (and all for under $10) I’m very lucky that he will wear hats!

Any readers out there with littles to dress?
What are your dream sources for children’s clothes?

Big thanks (and hugs and squeezes) to Jessa and Oscar for sharing their awesome hula-hooping adventures! Not to mention making us all insanely jealous that her kid will wear hats (I don’t even have a kid, and I know that this is a rare and magical thing!) We’ve had 15 years of our own adventures (and being a sentimental sap) I still get a little happy/weepy every time I see Oscar. So don’t mind me, I’m just blinking back happy tears from Tokyo because that lucky little rug rat has the best mom ever! :)

LBD Four Ways with What the Frock

Hello, Glitter and Ganachers! When Tabitha asked me to guest post while she was in Japan, I was honored and excited. And jealous – I want to go to Japan!

A bit about me: I’m Dana, and I blog over at What the Frock?, a fashion and shopping blog for fashionistas on a budget. A few months ago, I put myself on a self-imposed shopping ban, and it’s recently been lifted, since I reached my savings goal. But, that doesn’t mean that I’m allowed to go on a huge shopping spree (although holy COW do I want to!) – instead, I’m going to make a handful of smart, frugal purchases to get me through spring and summer, and rely on some old standbys as well.

One of the few purchases I’ve made since lifting the shopping ban is this simple, basic and cheap dress from Target. It’s out of stock online, but I’ve seen in in two different stores this week. It’s lightweight and stretchy, it’s comfy and flattering, and it was only $20!

I’m probably going to be living in this dress for the next few months, so I decided to dress it up a few different ways, to make sure I get my money’s worth. This is something that one can do with almost any simple LBD. Check it out:

Outfit #1 - Slumming It
This is something I’d wear on a hot summer weekend, when it’s just too hot to put on pants, when I’m running errands but still want to look presentable.

Bag: Kate Spade (similar) // Sunglasses: Forever 21 (similar) // Sandals: Salt Water Sandals (similar)

Outfit #2 – The Office
I normally can wear whatever I like to the office, but when a client comes in, I need to be a bit more dressed up. This outfit is professional and stylish without being stuffy.

Cardigan: Piperlime (similar) // Shoes: Missoni for Target (similar) // Necklace: Vintage (similar) //
Bag: Anthropologie (similar)

Outfit #3 – Brunch
I’d wear this to a fancy brunch or even an afternoon wedding. It’s a bit more costume-y than what I usually wear, but I’ve really been craving bright accessories lately. The dress is so lightweight that it easily tucks into a skirt with some volume.

Skirt: The Limited // Shoes: c/o Michael Antonio (available here) // Clutch: Anthropologie (similar) // Bracelet: c/o Bauble Bar (similar) // Necklace: Lala Design Studio // Scarf: Vintage (similar)

Outfit #4 – Night Out
If I ever went anywhere at night where I had to look fancy, I’d pair the dress with some sparkly, chic evening accessories.

Shoes: Topshop (similar) // Clutch: Free People (similar) // Necklace: BHLDN (similar) // Bracelets: Ruche, Madewell, H&M (similar)

And that’s that – I got my money’s worth!
Do you have a versatile LBD in your closet? What are your other favorite versatile pieces?

Yes Dana, I think you got your money’s worth! Thank you so much for sharing these awesome, awesome, awesome combos with us! I’m especially loving those pink sandals (I’m on a pink kick lately) and that polka dot purse (I’m always on a polka dot kick!) And I have a confession to make: I don’t own a LBD. Not one. Eek. Maybe next time you’re in LA we’ll have to work on that? Off to do a little shopping of my own here in Tokyo now! Mata ne!

Bleached Jeans DIY from Her New Leaf

When Tabitha contacted me to guest post while she was away, I was honored – and intimidated! I just wasn’t sure how to translate my usual crafty, geeky girl content to fit her fabulously stylish blog! That girl has style for miles – I mean, swan purse? Cape? Who can pull that off?!

Some of my favorite Glitter and Ganache posts have been Tab’s Closet Rehab series – turning old or worn-out favorites into something new and wearable is so exciting! When I was cleaning out my closet a few weeks ago, I got an idea for a Closet Rehab project all my own.

My favorite trendy pieces this spring are white and bright jeans. They are a great way to add some instant style to an otherwise average outfit. I found this pair of gray jeans from a few years back, so I decided to bleach them to make them new and stylish!

Before you bleach, prepare your space. Open windows for ventilation, keep pets away, and change into work clothes just in case of splashing. Rubber gloves are definitely a good idea when working with bleach.

To bleach your jeans, soak your garment in a solution of 10 parts hot water to 1 part bleach. I ended up using about 20 cups of water and 2 cups of bleach to fill my little sink. Make sure that you have enough bleach solution to cover your jeans.

You will see the color of your jeans start to change immediately – it’s kind of magical! Use your gloved hands to make sure all parts of the jeans are soaking in the bleach.

Let soak for as long as you like – my jeans took about 30 minutes for all of the seams and thicker portions to be thoroughly bleached. Keep in mind that the bleaching process can be totally different depending on your garment’s fabric content and dye.

Once your jeans have the look you want, drain your sink and wring out your jeans, then rinse in cold water and wring again. Toss your jeans in your washing machine (alone!) and wash and dry them as usual.

Then enjoy your trendy new white jeans:

Outfit details:
Pac Sun Top//Forever 21 Tank//Charlotte Russe Jeans//Steve Madden Flats//Necklaces from Etsy seller Soradesigns and Fool’s Gold from Forever 21//Target Watch//Thrifted Belt

Thanks so much Kira! This is an awesome closet rehab and the perfect way to embrace the white jean trend (and the spring, right?!). So make sure you guys head over and check out Kira’s amazing blog, Her New Leaf, where she’s a crafty genius 24/7! Hugs from Tokyo you guys!
