Lipstick Trials

No juicy lesbian gossip here,
just lipstick. :)

I finally got around to trying Poppy King for J. Crew- you know that color every single model in the last few catalogs has been sporting, and thought I’d share.

I don’t know what I was thinking showing you a (near) profile picture though. Yikes.
Focusonthelipskthanks!

Thoughts:
I like the color. It has an orange base, which goes a little coral/pink on me.
I like the moisture level. It’s not overly dry like my favorite MAC shades always are.
It’s a little too sheer for me. I really favor a bold lip and you have to load up A LOT to get that with this.

Verdict:
It stays in my purse with my other (bold) favorite lipsticks: Russian Red by MAC and Fuchsia Star by Dior.

Now I just need a good neutral! Any suggestions?
And what’s your favorite bold lip color?

Art For Breakfast: Stephanie Kilgast

1/2/3/4

My love of miniature food is already well-established, but the attention to detail in these tiny tableaus just kills me! Kills me. Especially the tiny meat and (moldy) cheese board. And the paper-wrapped bread. Oh! Who am I kidding? I love love love all of Stephanie Kilgast’s teeny tiny work.

I totally got sucked in to her flickr stream this past weekend and couldn’t stop oohing andy ahhing over all the perfectly delicious (and real) looking tiny food. You’ve been warned!

Are you a sucker for mini things too?
And do you collect or just admire?

Bicycles + Sunshine

1/2/3

I think some combination of manic weather (it’s summer! nope, it’s raining!), shooting our final episode of Parks, and drinking a bottle of wine with my newbikesportingbestie this past weekend really kicked my bike-crazed spring fever into high gear. Ba-da-bum.

And then I’d ring my cute little bell, and speed off down the street.
If only I had my new bike already!

And in my dreams she’s a black Linus Roadster Sport.
Every night.
I’m loyal that way.

Weakened by wine and good company it could have happened this past weekend, but damn you DTLA Bikes… What kind of nonsense is being closed on Saturday?!

Soon. Unless it keeps raining…

What are you dreaming of for spring?
And can you recommend a cute helmet?

Navy + Neon

and a little lace too.
Just pretend that alley is a red carpet (Oscars Woot!) and we’re in business.

Seriously though, you may notice something rare in the above photo, is that, dare I say (see) it, a smile?
Yes, yes it is. A half a bottle of wine in the afternoon, and a car pumping some Tom Tom Club while my photographer does a little shimmy will illicit that response.

Now if only there was a photo of my face a few moments later when a random passerby praised Kerri’s dancing and told me I should “audition to be a celebrity.” Watch out world, here we come!

I like this outfit because it’s high impact (no real wallflower here) and still super comfortable. And just before I left the house I hacked off the bottom six inches of this dress because it made me look matronly. I’m a fan of last minute modifications that way. I’m good with short, short, short, or just below the knee pencil skirts, but anything else makes me look a bit dowdy/short.
Do you know your best skirt length too?

I like to think a classic trench classes up any outfit and even takes the edge off my lace tights. In a good way though. I like to walk the line.

The Outfit: Jason Wu for Target Dress, Banana Republic Trench,Hue Lace Tights, Vintage Shoes, Madewell Pig Locket and a giant cocktail ring from I don’t know where! (But isn’t it fabulous?)
Photographer + Drinking Buddy: Kerri! Just the type of fitness instructor you want. :)
Location: My beloved DTLA.

Neon yellow + classic navy and red is quickly becoming one of my favorite color combinations for the spring. The neon feels fresh, festive, and evocative of one of my favorite office supplies: the highlighter! Oh! And do I have plans for this little (glitter) pig locket!
I mean, what else will fit in that tiny pork belly…

What about you guys?
Any fun finds this weekend? Closet hacks? Favorite spring color combinations?

Get Yo’ Greens!

This soup stew is one of my favorite things to make at the beginning of a week (or weekend) and nibble on for days. It’s simple, hearty, and fantastically aromatic- your whole house will smell like some idyllic Italian countryside. And it packs a whopping four cups of kale!

Of course the best part is that it also packs a whole baguette!

Which is bested only by the six cloves of garlic and rustic rosemary scent that will fill your kitchen.
And the rest of your house too.

Kale + Bread Soup
serves 8

Ingredients:
4 cups kale
1 large zucchini
1 large onion
1 cup mushrooms
6 cloves garlic
2 sprigs fresh rosemary
1 stale baguette
4 cups veggie stock
1 can diced tomatoes (14 oz)
1 can cannellini beans (14 oz)
3 tablespoons olive oil
shaved cheese to garnish
salt
pepper

Directions:
1. Saute the mushrooms in 2 tablespoons olive oil and set aside. Remember Julia Child and Don’t crowd the mushrooms!
2. In a large pot/dutch oven saute zucchini, onion, garlic and rosemary for about 10 minutes or until tender. Make liberal use of salt/pepper.
3. Return mushrooms to pot along with tomatoes and stock and bring to a boil.
4. Add beans and bread, then pile the kale on top and cover for a few minutes.
5. Once kale is wilted, stir it in to the stew, re-cover and allow to simmer for 15-20 minutes.
6. Salt and pepper to taste.

Of course the bread is already in the soup, so this is a total one pot/one bowl sort of meal. Score!
Serve it with a nice red wine to warm up any chilly night!

Or maybe even toss it on the stove to soak up all that Oscar Party bubbly…

Grey Gardens in the Springtime

So maybe excessive glitter just isn’t your thing. And that’s okay. I think we can still be friends…
I’m even offering up this little flea market foray as a sort of glitter penance. Something about the vintage print, the blue velvet, and yes, the market, feel very Grey Gardens to me. Grey Gardens with hot pink wedges. I mean we couldn’t go straight to the (fabulous) turbans and 300 cats just yet…

I couldn’t resist this vintage enamel Koi bracelet with all his jewels intact! Definitely a better choice than the slightly cool (but super creepy) Elizabeth Taylor painting I had my eye on…

Grey Gardens is oozing romance, and ghosts, and other things.-Little Edie.

Yep. I think this Homart “flashlight” might be in that last category. (or the first, smirk)
I mean, check out my nails!

And the details…
The Outfit: Dress from XXI, Shoes from DV, Headband from American Apparel, Glasses from Illestava, Bracelets vintage + J. Crew.
The Location: Melrose Trading Post

Sandals + Short sleeves are pretty good for February (even in LA) but by the end of our wanderings I had to admit that we’re not quite there yet. Definitely six more weeks of winter, even if winter LA style means I could have added a cardigan (or tights!)

Oh well, a few shivers were worth it to score my new fishy friend!
What’s your favorite flea market find ever?

Oscar Party Madness: Ballot Download

Click Here to Download your own Awesome Oscar 2012 Ballot Book!

This book is a bajillion (there I go with those factual numbers again!) times more awesome than anything I could have imagined when I asked Rachel over at Lupa & Pepi to design an Oscar Ballot for you guys!

It includes a place to check off your vote in every category, and a cute little star to fill in whenever you get it right (making it easy to tally up the winner post champagne/party).

So print ‘em out and slather ‘em up with glue & glitter (or whatever your little heart desires) because it’s only T-minus 4 days until the Oscars now…

Oscar Party Madness: Part II

Hey guys! Sorry it’s a little later today than usual (oh work!) but here’s more Oscar Party pretty for you to enjoy! And just in time for lunch right? I hope you’re having something good!

And that it goes with the heaping side of sparkles I’m serving up:

Oh! And don’t you dare get overwhelmed thinking it’s too late to throw your own awesome party either! You’ve still got 4 days, which is plenty of time to ice the champagne and glue some glitter garlands together!

To make your own Glitter Garlands: Snag some glitter paper from your local craft store and use a coaster/cup/saucer to trace and cut out circles. Glue two circles back to back with a piece of string sandwiched in between (twine/ribbon whatever you’ve got) and repeat until your garland is the right length. Simple, sparkly, and shiny penny cheap.

Keep the crafts + cocktails simple. I stuck with a few glittery jewel tones, and used the same high-tech process for all crafts involved: slather _______ with regular ol’ white glue using a small paint brush, then douse in glitter. And repeat. Flags, Oscars and polka dots are mesmerizing when covered with glitter. Trust me. The 3 year old at the party couldn’t resist, and neither could us grown-ups!

And nothing is simpler than a champagne cocktail: a little lump of sugar, champagne and a dash of bitters. I adore this Lavender Spice Bitters from Greenbar Collective because it smells like heaven, tastes like Provence and makes me feel so fancy. And it’s organic. Awesome.

And finally, perhaps my favorite part of any Oscar party- the ballot!
Or more specifically, the voting. Yes, I’m competitive that way.

But since the ballots themselves are usually pretty boring, I knew we needed to spice (and sparkle) it up this year! I asked Rachel of Lupa & Pepi to come up with something special, and she created these amazing little ballot books. I want to eat them up they’re so deliciously cute.
Mmm…Crunchy glitter.

And because I love you guys, they’ll be available to download a little later today!

Might I recommend you print out a pile and go glitter crazy while mocking admiring the red carpet?
That’s what I’ll be doing for sure! Both the mocking and the admiring.

Have a great day guys! And do tell who you’ll be waving your (glitter) flag for this year!
The Artist? My Week with Marilyn? The Muppets?
