My Dog the Youtube Star + Instagram DIY!

And a little of my weekend too…

My goal this weekend was to see as many friends as possible before I head out to New Orleans on Saturday, and boy was I an over-achiever. I managed to see a bunch of friends + enjoyed a few long bike rides, crazy coffee drinks, a rooftop hot tub, the dog beach, and a bottomless champagne brunch (with live jazz).

Success. And a sore ass.
Thanks friends!

It was a great weekend for me, and probably even better for Tallulah, who hit up the dog beach, and blew up on YouTube. Okay, okay, blew up might be a slight exaggeration, but I’m just a proud mama!

So indulge me and look at a few pictures of my cute dog, and then I’ll share a super easy (and wearable) DIY for all those instagrams (of your cute dog) currently trapped on your phone.

Oh, right, we had fun too!

And now…
My Crazy Dog Lady DIY for Kin Community:

Of course you could be a crazy anything lady (or man) and indulge yourself in this easy peasy awesome DIY. Well, almost anything.

Supplies:
Digital Photos/Instagrams
Photo Transfer Paper (mine is from Office Depot)
Tshirt
Iron

Instructions:
1. Edit your image in either Photoshop or PicMonkey (it’s free!) to add
washi tape/borders/etc… Or just print as is!
2. Print on Photo Transfer Paper and trim edges.
3. Iron your shirt.
4. Lay Image face down and iron in place for 2-3 minutes.
5. Once cool, carefully peel off backing and admire your new (and dorky) creation.
6. Go for a walk an feel so very meta.

I love the vintage vibe and the possibilities for heart-felt (or amazingly personal gag) gifts are endless.

So do you think it’d be weird if I started printing shirts with all my food pics?
Those definitely rival my dog pics…

Oh!
And how was your weekend?

Subject: Holy Sh*t!

The Selby

Me: This woman has a mini horse in her incredibly stylish house!

Katie: THIS IS AMAZING. I love every photo and why are we not vacationing in Germany this summer with these people!?

So whadda you say Dorothee Schumacher?
Care for some California house guests this summer?

ps. Email exchange between my friend Katie and I.
pps. Told another friend I was throwing up a post about mini-horses before I met up with her, and her nonchalant response: “My step-mom has a mini horse farm in Maui.”
ppps. A MINI-HORSE FARM IN MAUI? Why was this not in all capitals?
I think it’s THAT important.

Have a great weekend you guys!
Anyone else wanna rub their proximity to mini-horses in my face?
Please?

Shades of Blue

Style, food, and champagne, or three of my favorite things. This outfit celebrates the coming summer (yes, I’m wearing white shoes before labor day whoeversrulethatis be damned) and shows off a few of my shiny new accessories straight from Tokyo.

I just couldn’t resist this fabulous gold sequined bag with leather handles, and I’ve been wearing my new pink pinky ring pretty much everyday since I bought it. That makes it a fine purchase in my book! I’m also smitten with these “paper pearls” which are all the rage in Tokyo, and were a going away gift from my Japanese mama!

The boater, the pearls, the white shoes, the champagne…
It’s all very Fitzgerald.

And thank god for the hat (tiny brim or no) because when I set out on sunday, I had no idea we’d end up sipping away the afternoon on the roof at Perch.
Also, eating the biggest shrimp I’ve ever seen.

It was glorious.

Here’s the details:
Location: Perch (take your out of town guests and hot dates there immediately!)
Outfit: Polka Dot Boater from Forever 21, Shirt from Zara, Jeans from Urban Outfitters, Shoes from American Apparel, Bag, Jacket, Pink Ring, & Pearls from Tokyo
Photographer: (& champagne swiller) Kerri

Oh! BTW- I’m experimenting with using larger photos around here.
This weeks posts are all 650 pixels wide, whereas my usual pics are 550.
Yay or Nay? I’d love your thoughts/opinion!

Neon Ombre Striped Tote DIY

Whew, that’s a mouthful huh?

I promise the actual project is so much simpler!
Check out this little video I made for Kin Community:

And then get ready to create your own neon tote on the cheap just in time for summer!

You’ll need:
Plain Canvas Tote (Michael’s sells a 3-pack for $9.99!)
Neon Fabric Paint
White Fabric Paint
Small Paint Brush
Painters Tape
Leather (or another heavy duty fabric)
Thread

And go:
1. Remove the straps from your tote using a seam ripper to remove the “xbox” reinforcements and scissors to cut off the existing straps.
2. Tape off three stripes: I made mine 2″, 1/2″, 1/4″.
3. Paint the bottom stripe with the neon paint full force.
4. Add a little white paint to the neon and paint the next stripe.
5. Add even more white paint and paint the final stripe.
6. Let dry and remove the painters tape. Woo hoo- magic straight stripy, stripes!
7. Cut 1″ wide leather straps (I made mine around 22″ long so that I can comfortably hang my bag over my shoulder) I cut the ends on the diagonal just to be fancy…
8. Stitch your new straps on to the outside of the bag where old straps once were. Neon thread looks awesome against leather, just saying! I recommend using a sewing machine and an “x” pattern for strength, but you could also stitch ‘em on by hand.

Not bad for a few bucks and a half hour, right?!
I think this is just the perfect amount of neon to spice up a neutral outfit or a trip to Trader Joe’s!

Which (right angle heavy) geometric shape should I experiment with next?
Squares? Triangles?

And what are you making this week?

Japan Week 1

I’m baaack!

And Japan was every bit as awesome (even more so) as I remembered/hoped it would be!
I was traveling for nearly 3 weeks, so naturally I have a boatload of pictures, a boatload of laundry, and more than just a little jet lag! I’m not gonna even tell you what time it is right now as I write this because in a few short hours when it posts I know I’m not gonna wanna be reminded I was still awake!

So grab a cup of tea (or in real Japanese fashion, a beer!) and check out my first week in Tokyo:

Armed with my plane ticket, passport, and a little light reading material I hopped on that very plane, and 11 short hours later was reunited with one of my best (and oldest) friends in the world, Nami!
And when I say old, I obviously mean our friendship (20 years!) Crazy right?

It was raining and Nami had to work for half the day, so I amused myself wandering around Harajuku/Shibuya and admiring umbrellas. At the first hint of rain all the stores put out umbrella bags and some restaurants even have umbrella lock-ups to keep your umbrella safe (and their floors dry) while you eat. This level of organization makes me giddy.

I decided to get out of the rain and amuse myself in Tokyu Hands for a while. I had a coffee in their super cute cafe surrounded by succulents and took advantage of the free wifi. Tokyu Hands is a 7 story behemoth “creative lifestyle” store which stocks everything from cute camping gear, to face wash, to washi tape. There are entire floors devoted to stationery, DIY, housewares, and pet accessories to name just a few categories. It’s heaven.

I spent the next day with Nami’s adorable parents eating unagi (eel) at Oedo, a restaurant that serves only unagi. We also ate gelato and sakura mochi in our travels. It was a delicious day.
And just in case you want to see how unagi is served at an unagi restaurant:

It sits pretty on a bed of rice in a little laquer box! Disclaimer: I may or may not already have a mouthful of unagi at this point!

Saturday was my BIG eating day and Sukiyabashi Jiro did not disappoint! It was by far the best sushi (not to mention some of the best food) I’ve ever eaten, and of course I discovered new favorites! The experience merits it’s own post, but for now the edible art you’re looking at is chutoro and kuruma ebi. And it was amazing.

After lunch we did some shopping in Ginza (how crazy is it that they close the streets to cars on weekends?) and had coffee/dessert at La Duree. Yep- sushi followed by macarons pretty much makes this my favorite food day EVER. And how pretty are those strawberry desserts?

On Sunday we went on a little road trip to Chiba to go Strawberry Picking! Along the way we stopped and ate ice-cream at the cleanest rest-stop I’ve ever laid eyes on, visited the Pacific, and happened upon an awesome Taiko performance. We finished the night off at a local izakaya with lots of delicious small plates (sashimi, tempura, croquettes, french fries, yakitori, etc..) and lots of beer.

And that was my first week in Tokyo!

Just let me know if you have questions or want to know more about anything specific, otherwise I’ll just continue recapping week by week, with longer posts dedicated only to those experiences I found extra bonkers amazing!

Sukiyabashi Jiro! Calico Cat Cafe! Nikko! Tokyu Hands! I’m looking at you!

Another big thank you to all our guest posters who kept you company while I was away!
I’m so happy to be back and excited to share more of my trip with you guys!
It’s been forever…
What have you been up to?

The Pacific

It makes my heart hurt a little that we share the same ocean, but spend most of our lives so very far apart.

And it blows my mind.
But then the ocean always makes me a bit contemplative.
You too?

I’m so very happy I got to spend most of this trip just hanging out with family. Eating ice-cream by the roadside, picking strawberries, drinking (a lot!) around the dinner table, and visiting our shared ocean.

A perfect trip.
And now I’m crying my eyes out in Narita airport waiting for my flight back to LA.

More excitement, less nostalgia next week.
I promise.

Did I mention that I visited Calico Cat Cafe twice?
That’s right, a coffee shop where you hang out and play with cats…

Hard to imagine?
Don’t worry, I have LOTS of pictures!

Watercolor Flower DIY with Michelle Edgemont

Michelle here! Super excited to be guest posting for Tabitha while she jets around Japan. Today, I’m showing you a really quick and easy way to paint watercolor flowers. When I was in art school, one of my favorite projects was to mimic a Liberty Print using paint and a thin, drawing pen. Fast, fun, colorful, and mistake proof = the makings of a perfect afternoon project.

Supplies:
watercolor paper
watercolor paints. I use dye, but any transparent, watercolor paint will work just fine.
paint brush
thin drawing pens

Instructions:

1. Starting with the largest flowers, paint some abstract, flower-like shapes. No need to be too exact! Make sure to leave room for other flowers and leaves.

2. Move on to your next flower color and be creative.
Keep painting flower shapes in different colors until your paper is mostly filled.

3. Fill in the empty spots with some green blobs. These will be your leaves.
Let the paper fully dry. This is important.

4. Now, go in with your thin pen and draw sketchy flowers over the painted shapes.
All done!

Use your new works of art for handmade greeting cards, put them in a frame, or just pin them up on your inspiration board to remind yourself how talented and amazing you are

Michelle is one of my (obviously) incredibly awesome new(ish) friends from Alt! She just oozes creativity, and as a former art student who also LOVED playing with watercolor/ink, this DIY is right up my ally! Bright, simple, and impossible to screw up- this might just be the most perfect DIY ever! And it’s just in time for Mother’s Day too! So what are you waiting for? Bust out your paints AND head over to Michelle’s awesome site for even more inspiration.
I know, is it even possible!?

Off to enjoy my last day in Tokyo before I hop on a plane and…land in LA the same morning.
Jetlag (and Los Angeles) here I come…

Yamashiro Farmer’s Market with Squeeky Knees

One of the things that I love most about LA (and Tabitha) are the simple things that can make an outfit (or in my case) a beautiful day! I decided to take my family up to Yamashiro for their evening (5-9 pm) farmers market and wine tasting. The market is held every Spring/Summer above Hollywood and makes for a perfect end to a work week–excuse for an overworked mom to have a few cocktails– and watch those famous LA sunsets.

We got lucky as the rain kept the crowds at bay; Elijah had a blast running from the “french fry” truck to the “potato chip” stand and back….

Be sure to try the sliders with homemade chips as well as lasagna cupcakes, and of course finish it off with peach cobbler so good ‘it makes you wanna slap somebody’

Thanks TAB for giving me the opportunity to share my day with you….
Can’t wait to have you back.

XO,
Lis

Photos by my hubby Ivan

Family Style:
Lisa in Anthropologie cape, jean shirt. Madewell tote. J Crew ballet flats.
Elijah in Target pants. Right Bank Babies Fisherman sweater. Lightning McQueen super shoes.
Vivienne in Squeeky Knees leggings. Right Bank Babies reversible dress and flutter sleeve top.

Lisa always looks perfectly effortless- and with two small kids and an awesome business to run- that can’t be an easy task! I’m jealous. And hungry! I’m definitely gonna head up the hill to Yamashiro when I get back for a little wine, grub, and grocery shopping with a view! Thanks so much for sharing Lisa- I had no idea there was a market up there!
And…if you have little ones of your own, head over to Squeeky Knees and check out Lisa’s awesome line for babies on the go! Obviously she knows what she’s doing.

ps. Great minds think alike. That Madewell tote one is my go-to work/play/trekking around Tokyo bag!

Apples & Endives with De quelle planete es-tu?

Hello G&G readers! I’m Meg. I’m a Denver native gone Parisian and I really like all things pretty and excessive. And food. Now that spring is approaching, it is the ideal time to experiment with different fruits and veggies to create spring delights that are perfect for picnicking.

This salad is a little somethin’ somethin’ that I discovered while studying abroad during high school in Normandy. My host family made it one time, and I fell in love. Therefore I am here 6 years later sharing it here.

WHAT YOU NEED
-2 green apples
-2 endives
-block of swiss cheese
-dried onions
-walnuts
-dressing

YIELD: 4 hungry people (cut above list in ½ if preparing for two people)

PREP TIME: 15 minutes

Start off by cutting up all of the apples and endives. The method I usually use is apples in cubes and endives chopped then cut again like little pies… but get creative if you wish!

Next, cut the Swiss cheese into cubes about the same size and put it all in a big mixing bowl (preferably the one you want to serve it in).

Sprinkle the walnuts and dried onions on top (or whatever else your heart desires), and get ready to drool!

Last but not least, add the dressing right before you plan to serve the salad. The dressing used above is a simple cream dressing, but many different kinds of dressing are delicious on this simply fresh salad. One of my favorites is with a vinaigrette dressing.

This salad is absolutely perfect on a warm day with fresh produce and cold cut meats. Not to mention it is perfect for a pot-luck or a picnic!

The last step is to enjoy it and think about how beautiful the world is.

Bon appétit!

I don’t remember how I first discovered Meg’s delicious little blog- maybe she left a comment here and her blog name De quelle planete es-tu?/What Planet are you from? piqued my curiosity… But however I discovered it/her, I definitely want to be from Meg’s planet! Make sure you check out all her sweet Parisian adventures over at her fabulously named blog immediately! Merci Meg!

And now I’m off to eat some delicious Parisian-inspired pastries right here in Tokyo!
And just maybe, a little salad too!

Photo Booth Fun with Lupa & Pepi

You guys remember Rachel right? She created the most amazing Oscar Ballots + Invitations for my Oscar Shoot back in February. And now she’s back to share her ideas for DIY photo booths complete with fun summer downloads!
Enough of my blabbering though, here’s Rachel:

Being the hostess runs in my family. From intimate dinner parties to cocktails with a bunch of friends, I’ve hosted it! Just like in fashion, there are trends in parties. And what’s the hottest party accessory right now? The photo booth! Photo booths come in all shapes, sizes, and with various accoutrements.

A well-appointed photo booth is a wonderful ice-breaker because with props in hand, everyone becomes a ham. Additionally, the photos provide a keepsake for both the hostess and guests to look back at later and say, “Wow! We had so much fun that night!”

There are a million different companies that you can pay to set up this fab fun corner at your next soirée. These set-ups can get pricey depending upon the bells and whistles that you want. Personally, I’m a fan of the DIY Photo Booth. It’s easy on the wallet, it allows you bring to life the theme of your party, and it’s not as difficult as you might think!

STEP 1
Select an area with a good background for your photos. A clean solid or patterned wall would be great. Alternatively, you can hang a backdrop (fabric, tablecloth, or a big roll of paper).

example #1
This past holiday season I helped set up a photo booth at a holiday party. Festive props, speech bubbles with holiday phrases, and a large roll of paper (a.k.a. a seamless) were used. In this photo my boyfriend and I are testing it out to make sure everything works!

STEP 2
This is where the fun begins: the props! I love making my photo booths personalized to either the theme of the party, the people attending or (ideally) both! You can pull together objects, clothes, and accessories for people to wear and pose with but (this may be the papergoods designer) there is something really fun about two-dimensional props placed into a three-dimensional world. I like to make speech bubbles that are dry erase (endless fun!!) and a few paper props for my guests to pose with. You can learn how to make both of these if you take a peek at this very sweet DIY video that I did with Kin Community. Print out the downloadable step-by-step instructions and templates to help with assembly!

example #2
As co-host of a Jack & Jill shower, I set up a photo booth where party guests could dress up as the betrothed couple. With a few props inspired by the happy couple (a puppet version of her fat cat, a Wisconsin cheesehead hat from his home state, his wire-rimmed glasses, etc.) and a few speech bubbles, guests dressed up and played the roles of soon-to-be-weds all evening.

STEP 3
The last step is to choose how you would like to capture the images. Usually I leave a camera out for guests to take turns photographing each other. It’s more casual and helps people to meet one another. Another alternative for some of you more tech savvy people is to set your computer up and use Mac’s Photobooth app. Either way, be sure that your photographer has enough space to frame the photos properly.

Have fun setting the scene and your guests will love mugging for the camera. And just for you Glitter & Ganache readers, here are a few more paper props for you to use in your summertime photo booth.

One, two, three…. Smile!

Yahoo! I love a good photo booth, especially in combo with a good cocktail! And I can definitely see some mint julep photo props in my near future (because I’m moving to New Orleans and all that jazz). Thanks for all the inspiration and downloadable fun Rachel! Big wave from Tokyo!
